London has more than eight million trees. As green leaves give way to the reds and yellows of autumn, it’s the perfect time to throw on a jacket and explore the capital’s hidden byways.

Experts tell us that gentle exercise in the open air benefits both mental and physical health. All this within the M25! Our green routes pages Discover London’s Best Green Routes for Walking, Cycling and Wheeling (cprelondon.org.uk) offer an inspiring range of walks and cycle rides, from canal side strolls, to 100-mile hikes.

If the skies are clear, why not head uphill and enjoy a panorama of the city? Try Greenwich observatory, Alexandra Palace or Primrose Hill.

Or follow in the footsteps of the royals. The Royal Parks offer inspiring views and heritage treasures, from pelicans in St James’s Park, to Princess Diana’s Memorial Garden at Kensington.

If rivers are your thing, you can explore the Thames, from Wapping to Richmond, or discover the delights of tributaries such as the Wandle and Lee.

Woodland abounds in Hampstead, Epping Forest, Sydenham and Dulwich. Autumn’s the perfect time to set out on that fungus foray.

But if you just want to kick a few leaves and enjoy the autumn air, why not seek out your local park, and routes right on your doorstep?

London in autumn is a treasure waiting to be uncovered – one leisurely walk at a time.
