London blossoms in the sunshine

London has more than eight million trees, and as the weather brightens, they put on a fantastic display of flowers and new foliage.

Most eye-catching of all are the fruit trees. Even deep in the city, their drifts of pink and white blossom offer a vision of rural delight.

Fruit trees erupt in bloom this time of year to attract the insects that pollinate them. The insects are attracted to the bright colours and scents, helping the trees prepare for fruit bearing later in the year.

The season stretches over several months, from blackthorn and plums in March and April, to cherry and apple blossom in May and June.

You can find blossom trees along many high streets and residential roads across the capital, but for the most spectacular displays head into central London and the Royal Parks.

Great places to see cherry blossom across London include St Paul’s Cathedral, St James’s Park, Tavistock Square, Greenwich Park and Kensington Gardens.

Also blossoming in May is the handkerchief tree, originally from China. As its name suggests, the branches look as if someone has hung out their washing along the branches! You’ll find handkerchief trees in Greenwich and even in Postman’s Park near St Paul’s.
