Whitewebbs Oak tragedy – help prevent further losses
The recent felling of a Whitewebbs oak tree has added fuel to campaigners’ fire – support them today
Campaigners in Enfield were shocked when a nationally significant centuries-old oak was recently chopped down in Whitewebbs Park. The well-loved tree was judged to be a ‘fine specimen’ with hundreds more years to live and there was no obvious reason for it to be cut down.
Police believe there is no evidence of criminal activity in the felling of the ancient English oak which was irreplaceable habitat for hundreds of species. But Guardians of Whitewebbs has started a petition demanding Enfield Council fully investigate the incident, which has garnered tens of thousands of signatures.
Protect ancient trees
The group is also calling for the council to now place Tree Protection Orders on all notable veteran and ancient trees in Whitewebbs Park to protect them from similar destruction.
This could just be the start, as 207 trees are due to be felled to make way for Tottenham Hotspur FC’s new women’s football academy. The development, including 10 new training pitches, on this public park situated within the Green Belt was controversially approved in February.
There was widespread opposition from local people and CPRE London and the application has now been referred to the Greater London Authority and the Government. Please contact the Mayor of London and Secretary of State urgently requesting that they call in and refuse this application, quoting the reference 24/00987/FUL (LBE).
