More Natural Capital Coalition

From the threat posed to the city by climate change, to the depletion of our natural world, and the growing inequalities in health and wellbeing, Londoners need leaders who are up to the challenge of delivering a better future for people and nature.

Who We Are

The More Natural Capital Coalition brings together leading environmental organisations committed to working collaboratively to influence policy and decision making at Greater London Authority and borough council level. Our aim is to protect and enhance London’s natural environment for people and wildlife. The coalition is convened by CPRE London.

The coalition’s work is currently focussed on upcoming local elections. It has published a manifesto 10 Environmental Pledges for the May 2026 London Borough Elections. This sets out the priorities we are campaigning for ahead of the elections and forms the basis of our engagement with councillors, candidates and the public.

Through this work, we are encouraging Londoners to contact their local political parties, current councillors, and election candidates once declared, and ask them to commit to ten practical pledges to improve the environment in their boroughs.

  • From the threat posed by climate change to the depletion of our natural world and growing inequalities in health and wellbeing, London needs leaders who are ready to deliver a better future for people and nature.
  • The ten pledges set out practical actions that candidates and existing councillors can adopt to protect nature, improve access to green and blue spaces, and deliver real environmental benefits for local communities.

Our senior leaders and policy staff meet regularly to coordinate activity, align priorities and strengthen the collective impact of our campaigns. We aim to:

  • Engage and influence politicians and officials

  • Scrutinise proposals and shape relevant policies

  • Hold the Mayor, the Greater London Authority, and London boroughs to account on key environmental issues

What are we currently working on?

In the coming months, the Coalition’s main focus is on influencing prospective councillors ahead of the May 2026 London borough elections. We are encouraging candidates to include strong, practical environmental commitments in their local election manifestos, aligned with our ten pledges.

Alongside this, we are working to raise public awareness of the actions needed to make London a greener, healthier and more climate resilient city.

We are delivering this work through webinars, meetings, media engagement and social media activity. Look out for details of our upcoming public webinar.

Our impact so far

  • We set out our priorities for the London Mayor in our 2022 publication, A More Natural Capital: an agenda for the London local elections, which is currently being updated ahead of the May 2026 council elections.

  • We brought key environmental issues affecting the capital to the attention of mayoral candidates by discussing our calls to action directly with them and their teams. Candidates also took part in a well attended Mayoral Environment Debate on 25 March 2024.

  • We influenced positions on environmental issues in party manifestos, with members of the GLA’s Environment Committee continuing to raise these issues where relevant during the mayoral term.

  • Our campaigning for London to become a ‘Sponge City’ helped build understanding among decision makers of the links between urban greening, river and stream water quality, and flood resilience.

  • In early 2022, we encouraged candidates standing in the London borough elections to support our manifesto, A More Natural Capital: an agenda for the London local elections, which identified 28 actions the Coalition wanted borough councils to take.

  • In 2021, we formed the Coalition to influence commitments from mayoral candidates through our A More Natural Capital manifesto. We held our first More Natural Capital Coalition Mayoral Environment Debate and later published a First 100 days report assessing progress on delivery.
