Residential streets: 12 design elements – new guidance!
Residential streets: 12 design elements for greener and healthier streets. Use this to ask your local council to take action. Send it to your local councillor!
CPRE London believes all streets should be green and healthy, to help manage the climate and nature crises and to support healthy streets by enabling and promoting walking, wheeling and cycling. To achieve that, we need all boroughs to support the introduction of twelve design elements into residential streets.
- Watch the launch event video below, or download the presentations for lots of real life examples.
We’ve created a handy guidance leaflet to show quickly – and visually! – the 12 design elements. You can download this as a PDF (Residential Street Elements PDF June 2025); as an accessible Word document (Residential Street Elements accessible WORD June 2025); or here are the image files.

Additionally, we held our launch event for the leaflet on 26 June 2025 with fantastic presentations from:
- Kate Balls of Wheels for Wellbeing: Wheels for Wellbeing – accessibility and residential streets
- Jeremy Leach of London Living Streets on great residential streets for pedestrians: London Living Streets – Greener Residential Streets-26 June 25
- Alice Roberts of CPRE London on parking, front gardens, rain gardens and cycle parking: Residential Street Elements June 2025
- Carolyn Axtell of Possible on residential streets for climate adaptation and mitigation: Kerbside Greening
