Enfield Council has announced it will withdraw from the government’s new towns programme due to the impact on the borough’s Green Belt and has also promised to halt Tottenham Hotspur’s proposal to build a training facility on part of Whitewebbs Park.

CPRE London’s Operations Director, John Sadler, said “We strongly support Enfield Council’s commitment to protect the Green Belt at Crews Hill and Vicarage Farm and halt the proposed development in Whitewebbs Park. This news is testament to the hard work of local people and campaign groups such as Enfield RoadWatch, Guardians of Whitewebbs, Friends of Whitewebbs Park, Action for Enfield’s Future, Better Homes Enfield, the Enfield Society and others in raising awareness of the critical importance of the borough’s green spaces for public health, nature and the environment. There will be further challenges ahead, but this is very encouraging news. London needs affordable homes, but there is no need to build them on the Green Belt.”
