Dark skies in London?

13th February 2020

How many stars can you see at night in London?

Dark starry skies are a beautiful sight, and a distinctive feature of the countryside. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the beauty of a dark and starlit sky wherever they live – including London! But we fear the capital’s sky is so affected by light pollution that the opportunity to experience truly dark skies is denied to many.

In February, CPRE asked the nation to take part in our Star Count, a cosmic census to map the nation’s view of the night sky.

An incredible 2,500 people turned out to count the number of stars visible in the Orion constellation. We counted more than 27,000 stars over the course of one week and we’re now pleased to be able to share our key findings on an interactive map.

Why not explore the map to find out where in London it is possible to enjoy starry night skies?
