Greening Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Routes

We are committed to making key radial walking, wheeling and cycling routes gloriously green.

We are exploring with Ramblers and Footways getting their help on gathering information on specific sites for greening.  This will involve a combination of increased tree cover and rain gardens – which are also important for boosting the capital’s resilience to climate change and improving water quality in London’s rivers by reducing run off and the resulting overloading of the sewage system leading to sewage overflows.

Greening key radial walking, cycling  and wheeling routes will have number of benefits.  These include:

  • providing nature rich corridors from London’s countryside in to central London so wildlife can penetrate further into the city.
  • tempting more people out of their cars to explore London on foot or by bike or wheelchair while surrounded by nature – with all the health and well being this brings – as well as reduced carbon emissions and better air quality.

The first walk to be targeted will be the Green Link walk which extends from Peckham to Epping Forest.  It goes through Southwark, the City, Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest.

A second route under consideration is the Forgotten Rivers Walk (see marked on map above) which extends from Blackfriars Bridge out towards Hertfordshire.
A third focus route is the London Waterways route extending from Shepherd’s Bush to Bexley.
Walking routes along key river valleys in to the capital are also being explored to help with increasing connectivity of habitat rich in nature.

Support is needed from Transport for London and councils along the routes.

Clear signage is important as well as greening.

The next step will then be work on linking up the most green deprived areas to these key green routes.
