Family Housing: The Power of Concentration
London needs more and better family housing. Londoners may leave the city in huge numbers, often when couples start a family. A look at migration trends shows that over a decade, London can lose large numbers of people to nearby areas. Yet despite this loss, London continues to grow. This is natural growth, resulting from a younger age profile in a working population. We illustrate how attractive buildings can be provided, with 100 per cent three-bedroom family houses at 50dph (and up to 70dph). This supports local facilities within walking distance and allows space for amenities. This CPRE report is about how to provide good quality homes for families with children in urban areas. This can be done while still making efficient use of land and sustaining local services and amenities.

The London Planning Guide
The London Planning Guide provides a succinct and easy to follow explanation of how the planning system works in England and Wales, explaining who does what and at what stage in the process, and explains the nature and role of the Mayor of London's spatial development strategy for London. It is designed to enable non-specialists to engage with the land use planning system so as to influence local authority plans and decisions on individual planning applications. Detail is taken out and set aside in a series of annexes, enabling the reader to use the main body of the document to quickly develop a working level of expertise.

Thames Gateway: making progress
CPRE's proposals for making the most of an unprecedented regeneration opportunity to help protect the countryside across South East England.
The development of the Thames Gateway offers an unprecedented opportunity to accommodate on brownfield land much of the housing needs and relieve the pressure for urban expansion on greenfields across southeastern England. If done properly, the development could create a high-quality urban residential environment while protecting and enhancing the surrounding countryside. This report makes recommendations for optimising the area's urban capacity and long-term attractiveness as a place to live and work.
