About CPRE London
CPRE London is the London Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England.
CPRE is a charity which exists to promote the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of rural England by encouraging the sustainable use of land and other natural resources in town and country. CPRE promotes positive solutions for the long-term future of the countryside to ensure that change values its natural and built environment. Our Patron is Her Majesty The Queen. CPRE has a National Office in London, a branch in every county, over 200 local groups and 55,000 members and supporters - including more than 2,000 affiliated parish councils. CPRE's national President is Bill Bryson.
Standing up for the Countryside in London
We seek to complement the work of protecting rural England in other parts of the country. We want a beautiful, diverse and living town and country that everyone can enjoy. It is only through vigorous campaigning that we can achieve our ambition of making England a better place for present and future generations.
Why is CPRE active in London?
London and the South East has some of the most beautiful and varied countryside in England. Our green belt, woodland and field landscapes offer views with enduring beauty and character. London is a great capital city, and we need to protect its open spaces and waterways, including the River Thames. We also need to enhance its beauty and heritage of history buildings and culture.
Our Aim
CPRE London's charitable purpose is:
"to promote and encourage the improvement and protection of the English countryside for the benefit of the public, in particular through influencing the way that land and other natural resources are used in Greater London ."
To this end, we campaign to influence public policy, and other interests and factors which affect quality of life in London, so as to minimise adverse impact on the English countryside within the London Region and beyond. For obvious reasons. much of the campaigning work that we undertake in London focuses on the urban dimension to CPRE's purpose. However, given that some 10% of London's area is in fact rural, we also work to protect those areas in much the same way as CPRE's county branches work. In summary, we campaign for:
- the elimination - through urban regeneration and the efficient use of land - of the unnecessary expansion of the urbanised area of London, and
- a reduction in the out-migration of London's population to elsewhere in south-eastern England, including through improving the urban environment, and meeting housing and employment needs and promoting a better quality of life in London.
